Details on the 1st step of Mental Performance Training : Developing Awareness

I often write and speak about the idea of developing awareness.  A high level of awareness is necessary for an individual to learn, change and improve.  Awareness training is at the forefront of my mental performance program with athletes and non-athletes alike.

If you want to improve your performance or experience in CrossFit, work, relationships, etc., you can benefit from awareness training.  I coach individuals to an incredible awareness of their thoughts, behaviors and environment in order to reach ideal mental and physical performance.

Self-subversion is the conscious effort to understand your mind. You can make a concerted effort to know the way you think. You can evaluate your thoughts and behaviors.  By analyzing and becoming more aware of yourself, you can further understand your fears, successes,
motivation, letdowns, stressors, thoughts and actions.

This type of self-probing makes individuals uncomfortable, uneasy and threatened…that is why it is avoided. Most people just go through the motions and do not dig deeper or do not know how to gain a further understanding of their self.   Working with a professional or an emotional support often makes this process easier and more meaningful.

You make millions of choices everyday. Every single direction you choose has a reason behind it. How often do you stop to think about the reasons and motivations for making particular choices? This is often hard to do in a fast-paced environment with so many distractions. We question the reasons other people do things, and their motives but we rarely question ourselves.  Right?

You are influenced constantly by external and internal events. The environment around you has a direct impact on your thoughts and behaviors. Yet, internal events such as past experiences and imbedded emotions also create a huge influence.

I believe that self-subversion is underused, underestimated and likely the key to greater emotional balance, growth and understanding.

The result of a heightened awareness is being self-reliant, self-assured and self-confident.  I use many techniques to coach individuals to heightened awareness as part of my mental performance training program. I believe that this is the first step to elite mental and physical performance.

Our training involves developing awareness of your :

  • mental strengths & weaknesses
  • preferred focus channel
  • arousal-tendencies
  • sources of pressure
  • self-talk
  • optimal arousal levels
  • expectations
  • communication styles
  • motivators
  • sources of anxiety
  • goals
  • relaxation preferences
  • obstacles
  • how you react under pressure
  • preferred leadership style
  • fears…etc.

We work together on acknowledging, admitting and embracing your thought patterns, emotions and behaviors…then we can begin to develop the strategies necessary to gain further control of them.
